Camping weekend: borrow the gear

What you need
A weekend outdoors rarely fails on the weather and often on the gear you do not have. A tent that keeps the rain out, a cool box that stays cold, a table to sit at — all things neighbours own and do not need eleven months of the year.
How to go about it
- Collect tent and cool box on Friday, pitch the tent once in the garden or yard as a trial.
- Pre-cool the cool box overnight, charge the power station, pack the rucksack — heavy at the bottom, often-needed at the top.
- At the site, the tent first, then table and chairs; the cool box in the shade.
- On Sunday pack everything dry — hang a damp tent up once more at home before it goes back.
Friday to Monday: three rental days for a weekend at the lake or in the mountains.

Rent or buy?
If you camp once a year, you borrow — a good tent costs several hundred euros new and needs care. If you find it becoming a habit, borrowing has taught you which tent and which cool box it should be.
What matters
Have the tent explained briefly at handover — each one pitches differently. Compressor cool boxes need power or a power station; passive ones last a day with ice packs. Return it dry: a wet tent moulds in two days.
