Painting a flat: borrow the equipment

What you need
Painting itself is no art; the preparation decides. Old wallpaper off, walls smooth, the ceiling without ladder acrobatics — and for large areas a sprayer beats any roller for speed.
How to go about it
- Empty the rooms or move furniture to the middle, cover everything — floor, sockets, window frames.
- Strip old wallpaper with steam, fill holes, sand once dry.
- Cut in edges and corners with a brush, then roll or spray the surfaces.
- Second coat once dry; pull the masking while the paint is still slightly damp.
Two to three days for a three-room flat, one of them preparation.

Rent or buy?
Brushes and rollers you buy; everything else you do not. A paint sprayer or drywall sander is needed in most households once every few years and costs new as much as ten rental days. The ladder is the borderline case: if you often hang lamps, buy a small one — the tall one for old-building ceilings you borrow.
What matters
Count the days generously: masking and sanding take longer than painting. A sprayer pays off from about 40 square metres of wall; cover everything first, the floor included. Ladders here go up to four metres — enough for old-building ceilings.
