Cleaning the terrace and driveway: borrow the equipment

Pressure washer, surface cleaner.

What you need

A pressure washer gets moss and algae out of joints and off slabs; a surface-cleaner attachment does it streak-free and without spray. For a few garden chairs a small unit is enough.

How to go about it

Furniture and planters away, coarse dirt off with a broom.
Connect the pressure washer to tap and socket, test at low pressure on an inconspicuous spot.
Over the slabs in strips with the surface cleaner; joints and edges with the lance afterwards.
Rinse clean, let dry, top up joint sand if needed.

Rent or buy?

A pressure washer is the classic device people buy, use twice and then store in the cellar. For one or two uses a year, renting is cheaper and the cellar stays free — and the surface cleaner you need with it usually comes along from the neighbour.

What matters

Wooden decks only with low pressure and along the grain. Plan for a power socket and a tap within reach. An afternoon is almost always enough — borrow for one day.
