Getting the garden in shape: borrow the equipment

What you need
Twice a year a garden needs more than the watering can: moss out of the lawn, the hedge in shape, the terrace freed of winter. The equipment for it sits in the shed the other fifty weeks — or in the neighbour's shed.
How to go about it
- Mow the lawn short, then scarify on dry ground — lengthways and across.
- Rake off moss and thatch, reseed bare patches, spread lawn feed.
- Shape hedges and shrubs with the hedge trimmer, collect the clippings.
- Hose down the terrace, paths and garden furniture with the pressure washer.
One weekend in spring — and a second in autumn.

Rent or buy?
Anyone with a lawn buys the mower. Scarifier and pressure washer are needed twice a year; the hedge trimmer depends on the hedge. For everything that takes more shed space than it has uses, the neighbour is the better address.
What matters
Scarify only on dry ground and no deeper than three millimetres. Between March and September only shape hedges, never cut them back hard — nesting birds. Return petrol tools with a full tank, as agreed.
